The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB), a new federal program designed to provide up to $200 per month to low-income working-age Canadians with disabilities, faced delays in August 2025. While the first round of payments in July went through on schedule, many recipients reported missing their direct deposits this week.

Recipients Left Waiting for Support
The Canada Disability Benefit was introduced to help reduce poverty rates among Canadians with disabilities, many of whom live well below the poverty line. According to Rabia Khedr, national director of Disability Without Poverty, the payment provides critical support:
“Most people with disabilities live about $1,000, or 30 per cent, below the poverty line. It lets them buy some essential over-the-counter pain killers, maybe pay for their food, pay a backlog of bills and debt, pay their rent.”
Government Acknowledges Payment Delays
According to a recorded message from the Canada Disability Benefit call centre, a system issue caused some payments to be delayed:
“Due to a system issue some Canada Disability payments issued by direct deposit for the month of August 2025 will be delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
A spokesperson from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) confirmed the issue but emphasized that most payments had been completed:
“A limited number of client payments remain outstanding due to an isolated systems issue. Service Canada has addressed this issue, and is focused on ensuring timely payments for clients as soon as possible.”
While some payments were processed later on Friday, uncertainty remains for others still waiting.
Advocates Raise Concerns Over Federal Priorities
The delays come at a time when disability advocates are already expressing concerns about government priorities. Earlier this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney eliminated several cabinet positions, including the Minister for Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities.
This decision has drawn criticism from advocacy groups. Rabia Khedr pointed out that the lack of a dedicated portfolio risks sidelining disability issues:
“The new government did not have an explicit portfolio dedicated to disability. This basically means we are lumped into a huge portfolio that the current minister of jobs and families is responsible for.”
What the Canada Disability Benefit Means for Canadians
The Canada Disability Benefit is capped at $200 per month, or $2,400 annually. While modest, advocates say it provides essential relief for disabled Canadians who face higher costs of living and lower employment rates. The program is meant to supplement existing supports such as the Canada Pension Plan Disability Benefit (CPP-D) and provincial disability programs.
The delay in Canada Disability Benefit August 2025 payments has highlighted both the importance of the program and the vulnerability of those relying on it. For thousands of Canadians with disabilities, even a short delay can mean going without food, medication, or other essentials. While the government has reassured that payments will be resolved quickly, advocates stress the need for consistent, reliable delivery — especially when supporting some of the country’s most financially at-risk citizens.

My husband is a parapalegic now for 25 years. He applied online on June 20,2025 the day we rec’d the letter from the government suggesting he apply. This was also the First day that anyone Could apply. The JULY payment has not been deposited to his account. We phoned 1 or 2 days after that payment date and were told there was a glitch in the system and for him to wait for August payment date which should be a doubled amt to include the July missed payment. Today is August 23 and still have not received any payment. All the news i have read online only speak about August payments not being received due to the “Glitch”. This is not accurate certainly in this case and would not be surprised if in many other cases.
What remains as a result of all of this is that our vulnerability is not being addressed. Even my bank doesn’t know why this happened. They followed due diligence in providing my proper account number and it is the government that has failed immeasurably in this. Shame.
Still missing a payment on Saturday August 23rd. 🫣
Did you know, the CDB was originally designed to be 2,400$ a month? 💭 It was designed to help disabled Canadians get out of poverty, not keep us in it. 💔
This is unacceptable. We are disabled and live well below the poverty line. We cant afford to eat even with this benefit. The govt should realize that this kind of incompetence causes unnecessary stress and even more hardships on people that are already suffering due to the govt that refuses to support us. It is so sad that the govt treats us and seniors like this, while giving immigrants all the support they need. Our govt should be ashamed of itself.
Well said as a senior I rely on OAS and CPP, with both of these I am able to pay my rent and have 150.00 left to pay power, I have got 1 more month and phone power will be cut off. But on the bright side I am losing weight soon to be just a bag of bones. Thankx to our politicians we are doomed to all be poverty stricken.
Today is August 25 2025. I got my first payment for July and no payment for August so far. I was depending on this payment when I was told by letter that I had qualified for this payment! Because of this l could not get the extra food that l need!
I missed the July cut off and am still waiting for my July and August payments, which I was told there was a glitch in system and that most cheques have been paid out, except us few , for some reason or another…this is creating more stress and chaos for me due to my medical and mental instabilities.. I am disappointed and rightfully upset due to their delays..I was one day over the June cut off and told I will receive a double payment on August 21 and counted on these funds to help ease my disabilities and enable me to attend the in-person groups and councillling I had lined up..but missed all of them..
I want to say that this is most disgusting in so many ways we already suffering in society as disabled people and just trying to survive in a low support income in Canada it’s not cheap this isn’t even enough money to bragging about in any way the government and people that have good jobs don’t care about regular people have a some what livable life and be able to do some things to make them happy this is very sad.
