Many Canadians are still asking: Where is my carbon tax rebate? If you didn’t receive the final Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) this spring, you’re not alone. The good news is that you may still be eligible to collect hundreds of dollars in federal money — even though the program officially ended in April 2025.

What Happened to the Canada Carbon Rebate?
The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) was a quarterly, tax-free benefit issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to residents in provinces where the federal carbon pricing system applied. It was designed to return proceeds from the fuel charge directly to households.
However, as of April 1, 2025, the federal carbon tax system was officially scrapped, bringing the CCR program to an end.
The final payment went out on April 22, 2025. To automatically receive it, Canadians needed to file their 2024 tax return by April 2, 2025. Those who missed the deadline may not have received the rebate — but it’s not too late to claim it.
Didn’t File Taxes by April 2? You Can Still Get Paid
If you filed your 2024 tax return after the April 2 deadline, you may still qualify for the final Canada Carbon Rebate.
Here’s how it works:
- If your return was filed late, your CCR payment will be issued 6 to 8 weeks after the CRA processes your return.
- If you haven’t filed yet, you can still submit your 2024 taxes and claim the rebate retroactively, as long as you were eligible during the benefit period.
- Filing your return is the only way to trigger the payment.
How Much Money Could You Still Receive?
The final Canada Carbon Rebate payment varied depending on province and household size. Unlike other government benefits, the CCR was not income-tested — meaning every eligible household received the same amount, regardless of income.
Final Rebate Amounts (April 2025):
- Alberta – $228 (single adult), $456 (family of four)
- Saskatchewan – $206 (single), $412 (family)
- Ontario – $151 (single), $302 (family)
- Manitoba – $150 (single), $300 (family)
- New Brunswick – $165 (single), $330 (family)
- Newfoundland & Labrador – $149 (single), $298 (family)
- Nova Scotia – $110 (single), $220 (family)
- Prince Edward Island – $110 (single), $220 (family)
In most provinces, rural residents also received a 20% top-up. PEI was the exception, where the rural supplement was already built into the base amount.
Who Was Eligible for the Canada Carbon Rebate?
The rebate only applied in provinces where the federal fuel charge was in effect:
- Alberta
- Ontario
- Manitoba
- Saskatchewan
- New Brunswick
- Newfoundland and Labrador
- Nova Scotia
- Prince Edward Island
Residents of British Columbia, Quebec, and the territories did not receive the CCR, as those regions had their own climate credit programs.
How to Claim Your Canada Carbon Rebate in 2025
If you missed the April 2025 payment, here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: File Your 2024 Tax Return
Even though the program ended, the CRA will still process the rebate once your return is filed.
Step 2: Wait for Processing
The CRA typically takes 6 to 8 weeks to process late returns and issue payments.
Step 3: Check Your Bank or CRA Account
If you’re signed up for direct deposit, the rebate will automatically appear in your bank account. Otherwise, you’ll receive a mailed cheque.
Don’t Miss Out on This Final Federal Rebate
The Canada Carbon Rebate may have officially ended, but Canadians who missed the April deadline still have a chance to claim up to $456.
If you’re in Ontario, you could still receive $151, while Alberta families may be owed as much as $456. The key is to file your 2024 taxes as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out.
So, if you’re still wondering where your carbon rebate is — act now. File your return, check your CRA account, and ensure your personal information is up to date to receive your final payment.
