New Canadian Government Benefit Just Launched — Apply Now Before It’s Too Late

A brand-new federal program has launched in 2025 — and it could mean up to $200 a month for eligible Canadians. The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) officially rolled out this summer, and thousands of people are already receiving payments. But if you haven’t applied yet, the good news is that it’s not too late.

According to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), eligible applicants who file now can still receive retroactive payments dating back to June 2025. Here’s everything you need to know about eligibility, payment dates, and how to apply.

What Is the Canada Disability Benefit?

The Canada Disability Benefit (CDB) is a new federal income support designed to improve the financial security of low-income Canadians with disabilities. The benefit is available to working-age adults and aims to reduce poverty by offering direct monthly payments.

Payments began in July 2025, with the first deposit landing on July 17, followed by another round on August 21.

If you qualify but haven’t yet received your payment, you can still apply and may receive back pay for up to 24 months from the date your application is processed, provided those months fall after June 2025.

More details are available at canada.ca.

Who will qualify for the Canada Disability Benefit?

To qualify for the CDB, you must:

  • Be between 18 and 64 years old
  • Have been approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
  • Have filed your 2024 income tax return (and your partner too, if applicable)
  • Be a resident of Canada for tax purposes and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, Indian Act registrant, protected person, or long-term temporary resident

Exceptions:

  • If you turn 65, you can still receive back pay for the period you were eligible before aging out.
  • If you are incarcerated for two years or more, you generally cannot receive payments except in your first and last month of incarceration.

How much will the Canada Disability Benefit be?

The maximum monthly payment is $200, or $2,400 annually. However, payments are income-tested, meaning the amount you receive depends on your 2024 income.

Payment details:

  • Single applicants:
    • Income under $23,000 = full $200/month
    • With $10,000 working income exemption, you may earn up to $33,000 and still receive the maximum.
    • For every $1 above the threshold, your benefit is reduced by 20 cents (20%).
  • Couples:
    • Combined income up to $46,500 (with at least $14,000 from employment) = full benefit.
    • If both partners qualify, the reduction rate is lower (10%) on income above the threshold.

You can use the CDB Estimator tool on canada.ca to check how much you may receive.

When Are Canada Disability Benefit Payments Sent?

Payments are made monthly by direct deposit. According to ESDC, CDB benefits are issued on the third Thursday of each month.

Upcoming 2025 payment dates include:

  • September 18
  • October 16
  • November 20
  • December 18

If your application is approved, your first payment will include any retroactive amounts.

How to Apply for the Canada Disability Benefit

Applications are open and can be completed in four ways:

  1. Online through the official CDB portal on canada.ca
  2. In person at any Service Canada location
  3. By phone at 1-833-486-3007 (TTY: 1-833-467-2700)
  4. By mail with a printed application form submitted to Service Canada

Documents you’ll need:

  • Social Insurance Number (SIN)
  • Proof of legal status in Canada
  • 2024 income information (and your partner’s, if applicable)
  • Direct deposit details for faster payment

If you received a 6-digit application code from Service Canada, include it in your application to speed up processing.

Who is eligible for the $40,000 disability grant?

This is often confused with the CDB, but they are two different programs:

  • The $40,000 Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is not a monthly cash payment, but a federal non-refundable tax credit.
  • If you qualify, it can reduce income tax owed and also open access to other programs like the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), which can grow with federal matching grants of up to $70,000 lifetime.
  • The CDB, by contrast, is a direct monthly payment.

So, to be eligible for the $40,000 grant, you need to qualify for the DTC and open an RDSP, where the government can contribute grants and bonds over time.

Is Canada getting a disability benefit in July 2025?

Yes. The Canada Disability Benefit officially launched in July 2025.

  • The first payments were issued on July 17, 2025.
  • The second round was paid on August 21, 2025.
  • Ongoing payments are issued on the third Thursday of each month (September 18, October 16, November 20, December 18).

If you apply late but qualify, you may receive retroactive back payments dating back to June 2025.

What If You Haven’t Received Your Payment Yet?

According to Service Canada, processing times can take:

  • Up to 28 days for standard applications
  • Up to 49 days if submitted by a legal representative

If approved, your first payment — plus any retroactive amounts — will arrive on the next monthly payment date.

The Canada Disability Benefit 2025 is one of the most significant new federal supports for Canadians with disabilities. It provides up to $200 per month, with flexible income thresholds and the option to receive back pay for up to two years.

If you’re eligible, it’s worth applying as soon as possible to ensure you don’t miss out on financial support. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, visit canada.ca or your nearest Service Canada office.
